The Holiday Card: My Act of Love
The act of writing itself is like an act of love. There is contact. There is exchange too. We no longer know whether the words come out of the ink onto the page, or whether they emerge from the page itself where they were sleeping, the ink merely giving them colour.
~Georges Rodenbach, Poet & Novelist
My wife and I have been sending holidays cards for as long as I can remember. It’s a terrific way to send along greetings to family and friends that, for me, live all around the world. It all started many years ago when I used to help my mother insert the flaps into the envelopes, apply stamps and Christmas Seals for the cards on my parents ever-burgeoning Christmas Card list. In those days, growing up in Canada, you were able to bundle together cards going to the same part of town or even another town somewhere in Canada, tie them with twine, apply a special label, and as long as the cards were not sealed, you could mail them for less. I love that Canada Post helped spread holiday cheer.
And while it might seem anachronistic to send them today, I still send lots of cards and receive a few each year. I am warmed to be remembered by folks and grateful to receive them.
